After changing my clothes, I waited in the dormâs living area until Dolla emerged from our room.
All that sweating in the armor mustâve been beneficialârather than reeking of body odor, he was as fresh as someone whoâd just washed with well water.
He was wearing some fairly formal clothes. It was definitely more formal than my outfit, which was only a step above casual.
âWhyâre you dressed like that?â I asked.
âWhat, you think I donât own smart clothes? Of course I do.â
That was definitely a lie.
âYou brought those from home, right? I bet theyâre your dadâs.â
He didnât respond.
I wouldnât normally criticize the tailoring of someone elseâs clothes, but Dolla looked a little weird. His outfit was smart enough, but it was a little too big around the chest and shoulders, and it wasnât the kind of thing heâd normally wear. I was sure it belonged to Galla.
âIs it rude if I go wearing this?â Dolla finally asked, sounding a little downhearted.
âWell, not really... It should be all right.â
âItâs better than wearing my uniform, right?â he asked weakly.
Dollaâs uniform had seen a lot of rough treatment, so it was more than a little shabby. A few stains wouldnât have mattered so much, but the areas of faded color and the various patches made it look no better than a commonerâs clothing.
âThatâs true. I think itâs fine.â
Iâd stopped caring about his clothes already. Weâd both been summoned, but I didnât understand why heâd been asked, nor did I understand why he was suddenly worrying over his appearance when he normally wore his uniform for everything. It was like seeing a gorilla trying to put on human clothes. Once the gorilla had successfully gotten dressed, the proper thing to do was to praise it for the effort, rather than complaining about a few imperfections.
âLetâs head out as we are.â I got up, planning to set out.
âDolla?â a voice called outâMyalo had just entered the living area. âYouâre heading out right now?â
Dolla turned to look at Myalo. âYeah, thatâs right.â
When Myalo saw Dollaâs faceâor rather, his overall appearanceâher warm smile vanished. Her expression turned serious, and she firmly stated, âDolla, Iâm afraid I canât let you wear that.â
âI knew it... Itâll look rude, wonât it?â
âNot rude, just... You are going to see Princess Tellur, arenât you?â
âYeah,â Dolla replied.
âThen this isnât quite right.â Myalo seemed reluctant to explain the issue too.
âJust tell me what the problem is,â Dolla said.
âItâs outdated. Itâs something an old man might wear.â
Uh-oh. She actually said it.
She was rightâDollaâs clothes were really old-fashioned. He was like a fresh college graduate wearing an old, double-breasted suit. It would look just fine on Galla, but it looked wrong on his son. Maybe another student mightâve gotten away with it, but it just didnât fit with his image.
âOh, but thereâs no time left...â This was clearly taking its toll on him. He looked like a shadow of his former self.
âYouâre right... What should we do? We have to do something...â Myalo put her hand to her chin and gave it some serious thought.
